Today’s Tip: Congratulate SAM Principal Heather Buckley.

Iowa’s Elementary Principal of the year is Heather Buckley, Cardinal ES.

I love my job and have the most amazing team.

This award would not be possible without our SAM program and my talented SAM here at Cardinal. The SAM program has drastically enhanced my principalship. We have some great systems in place that have moved our school in the right direction. Jamie has built quality relationships with our staff and students. With her support, our behavior numbers for office referrals have seen a significant decline. We have had over 750 fewer office referrals over a 5-year span, and my instructional time as a principal has improved by 22% from our first year in the SAM program. I love being able to stay focused on the learning taking place throughout the building and being more available and supportive to our teachers and the work they are doing. There are so many wonderful educators that deserve to be recognized and I feel very humbled and honored by this award. Thank you for all your support to our school and our leadership.

Heather definitely deserves this award and represents all principals in a very positive way. There are not enough awards, however, to adequately thank school leaders this year. Take heart in the fact that each of you, principal and SAM, has made an important difference for many this year. You made a difference and continue to do so every day.

Today’s Tip: Review the new Performance Rubrics

In May and June each year Time Change Coaches work with SAM teams to complete a reflective assessment of their SAM process work.

We shared earlier that the performance rubric we’ve used in the past was revised and additional rubrics were created to make the annual reflective review more rewarding and robust. The purpose is to celebrate your success while considering next steps in using the SAM process to best meet your goals. It is worth taking a look prior to your session with your Time Change Coach.

There are three rubrics:

All SAM teams use the Performance Rubric 1.0: https://bit.ly/3jzMlyP As you consider where you are on the rubric consider if you are doing everything at each level. If not, consider the steps you could take as team. If you are doing everything at each of level of the Rubric 1.0 you have the option of using a second rubric, Performance Rubric 2.0: https://bit.ly/3LXe8W0.

For the first time we are using a separate rubric for additional TimeTrack users at a school. For example, if you are an assistant principal there is a separate rubric for you to use. Additional TimeTrack Performance Rubric: https://bit.ly/3vkvjdI.

You can click the rubric links, in BLUE above, to view and print. You can also access the rubrics when working with your TimeTrack. Click the orange TimeTrack logo, select INFO and then Written Tools.

Many teams and Time Change Coaches report the annual rubric review is helpful in setting goals for the upcoming school year. The new rubrics are designed to deepen and strengthen this reflective practice process with an emphasis on celebrating your work.
